A Progressive Christian Voice In the Heart of Maine.
High Street Congregational Church is an evolving Christian presence in the Auburn and Lewiston area begun in 1826. We are a church in the congregational tradition, connected with the United Church of Christ.
We are a church that is working to bring about the transformation of individuals and communities
We are a church that is Open and Affirming, welcoming and involving people of all ages, races, genders, orientations, and perspectives.
We are a church working to transform lives by the grace of God in Christ.
It is our goal to bring our lives to the place where we can “love God and love each other as ourselves.” In the Congregational tradition we have a strong emphasis on lay leadership, cooperation, and both the autonomy of our church and connection with other churches and faiths.
We encourage everyone to practice some ministry in their lives. A major ministry of our congregation is the High Street Food Pantry which distributes over a ton of food every week. Our theological perspective is widespread among our people, from conservative to liberal.
We believe that people must come to their own terms with God, but we work together to understand how the Christian faith interacts with the world today.
Our pastor, Stephen Carnahan, is an engaging speaker who uses music, humor, Biblical study and an ability to communicate deep insight. He is our spiritual leader and teacher. We meet for worship on Sunday mornings at 10:00. Various studies, classes and discussions are scheduled throughout the year.
